Does anyone know what models came with the oil coolers? Was it only the HST models? Just purchased a 2000 4300 syncreverse that doesn't have one.

Al, I also have a 2000 JD 4300/syncrev. It does not have an oil cooler and I don't recall seeing that feature as an option. It seems to keep it/s cool even when I'm roasting! Jim in Idaho ....

I associate oil coolers with HST's at least on compact tractors.
My impression is that HST's are somewhat less efficient than gear TX's and the reduced efficiency is expressed in terms of more heat generated by HST's. A few years back there was a discussion here about whether petro or synthetic hydraulic oil ran cooler in HST's I think the general drift was that synthetics ran cooler. As a sideline of the discussion, I concluded that TX heat could be a problem when doing heavy ground engaging work on a hot day using a HST tractor--else why have the discussion? Guess that's why my impression is that HST tractors tend to have oil coolers while gear TX tractors don't.

Thanks for the information. Does hydraulic use cause the oil to heat up much? It was my understanding that the cooler was for the HST only. What confused me was seeing a service bulletin on battery box fumes causing corrosion to the oil cooler. All models where listed not just the HST. I think in the case of the gear models the corrosion is to the radiator. JD changed the battery type to reduce this problem. ....

Its the same as an automatic in a car
It needs to have the fluid cooled either thru the rad or a separate cooler
Standards do not need them ....

Your oil will heat up if you are doing work to the oil. As the transmission oil and the hydraulic oil are one if you are using the hydraulic system you can have the oil heat up.
For example: With my 750 JD, if I was brush cutting with the FEL attached the hydraulic lines to the loader would heat up so hot, on a 100 - 100 day (temp. humidity), that they would almost burn my leg. In this case the system could have used an oil cooler. ....

Al, I misunderstood. Thought you were talking about engine oil. Possibly for hydraulic oil, a gear model could retrofitted with a cooler. Good question for the dealer. Jim in Idaho ....

Sounds like it was a hydraulic oil cooler added to just the HST models. If you still have your owner manual check out page 62. Cooler on bottom picture but not on top. Talk of confusing. Should just ask the dealer to confirm this. Having just got the machine I'am finding out that John Deere seems to make running improvements during model years. Some which are probably important to get done. Having worked in the auto. industry for years just not used to this. Design changes having to be being qualified for years first. I can't imagine with 7 gallons of fluid and all the mass of the gear transmission, rear end, etc that a cooler would do all that much. Does anyone have a 4300 or 4310 with a hydraulic oil cooler?
